Types of Semi Trailers: The Complete Buyer's Guide

There are more than a dozen distinct semi trailer types on the road, each engineered for a specific cargo profile, weight class and loading method.

Flatbed and Curtain-Side Trailers — General Freight Workhorses

Flatbed and curtain-side trailers cover the bulk of general freight tonnage worldwide, and they're usually the first stop when buyers start comparing semi truck trailer types. A standard flatbed trailer runs 40-53 ft long with an open deck at 4'6" (1.4m) off the ground, loaded from the top, sides or rear with a crane or forklift — steel coils, pipe, machinery, lumber, palletized goods, anything that doesn't need weather protection. Curtain-side units (also called tautliners or curtain-side trailers) bolt a sliding fabric curtain and roof onto the same flatbed chassis, so cargo gets rain cover without giving up side-loading speed — a forklift can drop pallets in from either side in under ten minutes. Both configurations typically run tridem axles rated at 40-60 tons GVW depending on regional axle load limits, and both are the cheapest entry point into the different types of semi trailers on the market. Typical payload on a tridem flatbed runs 28-34 tons of usable freight once tare weight and regional axle limits are factored in, and that number — not the trailer's headline GVW rating — is what actually determines cost per ton on a route. Curtain-siders carry slightly less than an equivalent flatbed, typically 1-2 tons less, because of the added weight of the curtain, roof bows and rear door frame. The common mismatch buyers make is ordering a curtain-side for cargo that doesn't need weather protection — steel, pipe and most construction materials are indifferent to rain, so the extra tare weight and purchase cost buys nothing. The opposite mismatch is running moisture-sensitive palletized goods — bagged cement, paper products, packaged electronics — on an open flatbed under a tarp, where a torn or poorly secured tarp is a common source of cargo claims that a proper curtain-side avoids entirely.

Lowboy, RGN and Extendable Trailers — Heavy Equipment Hauling

Once cargo gets taller, heavier, or needs a shallower approach angle, the different kinds of semi trailers start to matter — flatbeds run out of headroom first. A lowbed trailer drops the deck to 20-35 in (500-900mm) off the ground, buying 2-3 extra feet of legal height for excavators, wheel loaders and oversized machinery. When the load needs to drive on under its own power rather than be craned, a RGN trailer (removable gooseneck) detaches its front section so the deck becomes a ground-level ramp — standard on 3-line, 4-line and multi-axle heavy-haul fleets moving 40-100 ton equipment. For cargo that's long but not necessarily heavy — wind blades, girders, pipe strings — an extendable trailer telescopes from a 40 ft working length out to 60-80 ft, with a rear steering dolly keeping the tail end tracking through tight corners. Choosing between the three comes down to how the load needs to move, not just how tall or heavy it is. A lowbed suits equipment that's craned or driven onto a fixed deck and doesn't need the extra ground clearance of a detachable gooseneck — typical payloads run 35-45 tons on a standard 3-axle lowbed. An RGN earns its higher cost when equipment drives on under its own power or when the load exceeds what a fixed-deck lowbed's axle rating allows; 4-line and multi-line RGN configurations routinely carry 60-100+ tons. Extendable trailers solve a length problem, not a weight or height problem, and buyers sometimes default to one when the actual issue is height — telescoping length does nothing for a load that's too tall, only for one that's too long. The common misconfiguration is ordering a fixed-length lowbed for cargo that occasionally runs long, then needing a second trailer for oversized jobs instead of specifying an extendable from the start.

Tanker Trailers — Liquids, Gas and Bulk Powder

Liquid, gas and dry bulk cargo each need a purpose-built tank, and mixing them is a certification problem, not just a design one. Fuel tanker trailers carry 30,000-45,000 liters of diesel or gasoline in baffled aluminum or carbon steel tanks; LPG tanker trailers use thicker pressure-vessel steel rated to 1.8 MPa for propane and butane; chemical tanker trailers switch to stainless steel or rubber-lined tanks for acids and corrosives. Dry cargo gets its own tank family: cement tanker trailers and dry bulk trailers use pneumatic discharge with an onboard compressor instead of gravity, while water tanker trailers and bitumen tanker trailers handle potable water and hot asphalt at 150-180°C respectively. None of these are interchangeable — buy the tank rated for the specific product, not the closest one in stock. Selecting the right tank comes down to matching wall material and fitting hardware to the product, not just capacity. Fuel and water tankers use broadly similar aluminum or mild-steel construction and are sometimes assumed interchangeable, but a fuel tank's baffling, vapor-recovery fittings and bonding points aren't present on a water tank, and running potable water through a former fuel tank is a contamination risk regardless of how well it's cleaned. LPG tankers are pressure vessels built to a different certification standard than atmospheric tankers entirely, so matching capacity between an LPG unit and a liquid tanker says nothing about whether they're interchangeable — product type, not capacity, is the first spec to fix. Cement and dry bulk tankers add an onboard compressor and pneumatic discharge line that atmospheric liquid tankers don't carry, which is why a dry bulk trailer costs more than a liquid tanker of similar capacity despite hauling a lighter product by volume. The mistake to avoid is selecting by capacity first and product compatibility second — a bigger tank rated for the wrong product isn't a discount, it's a trailer that can't be used for its intended cargo.

Dry Van, Reefer and Specialized Box Trailers

Enclosed freight has its own branch among the types of trailers for semi trucks. A dry van trailer is the sealed box you see hauling retail and packaged goods — 53 ft standard in North America, loaded exclusively through rear swing or roll-up doors since there's no side access. A reefer trailer is the same box with insulated walls and a diesel-powered refrigeration unit holding -20°C to +25°C for meat, produce and pharma. Both trade loading flexibility for cargo security and weather protection, which is why less-than-truckload carriers and food distributors run vans and reefers almost exclusively over open decks. Payload on a 53 ft dry van runs 20-22 tons for dense freight before it cubes out — running out of floor space before hitting the axle weight limit — which is typical for palletized retail goods, furniture and packaged consumer products. A reefer carries somewhat less, typically 18-20 tons, because the refrigeration unit, insulated walls and diesel tank all add tare weight a dry van doesn't carry. The selection question between the two is straightforward — does the cargo need temperature control — but the common mismatch is running a reefer for freight that doesn't need it, which burns diesel on the reefer unit and adds tare weight for no benefit, or running a dry van for anything perishable, which leaves no fallback if a delivery is delayed even a few hours. Multi-temperature reefers, which zone the box into separate compartments at different setpoints, solve the problem of consolidating mixed-temperature freight onto one trailer, but the added cost is usually only worth it for distributors running regular mixed loads rather than single-product routes.

Purpose-Built Haulers — Car Carriers, Container Chassis, Log and Livestock Trailers

A handful of trailer types exist for one job and do it well. Car carrier trailers stack 6-10 vehicles across two decks with hydraulic ramps; container chassis (skeletal trailers) carry 20 ft or 40 ft ISO boxes locked down with four twist-locks and nothing else; log trailers use stake-and-bunk beds instead of a flat deck; livestock trailers add ventilated multi-deck pens for cattle and pigs. If your freight is genuinely unusual, the different types of 18 wheeler trailers available almost always include a purpose-built chassis for it — building a custom one from a generic flatbed is rarely cheaper once you count downtime and rework. Each of these trades general-purpose flexibility for efficiency on one job, which is the right trade when volume justifies it and the wrong one when it doesn't. A car carrier only pays for itself hauling vehicles in both directions — running one empty on the return leg erases most of the cost advantage over flatbedding vehicles individually. A 40ft container chassis is the cheapest way to move a loaded ISO container by a wide margin, but it's useless for anything that isn't already boxed — buyers sometimes order one expecting general-purpose flexibility it was never built for. Log and livestock trailers are the least substitutable of the group: a stake-and-bunk bed can't carry palletized freight and a flatbed can't legally or safely carry livestock, so these are true single-purpose buys justified only by consistent volume in that one cargo type. The test that works across all of them is volume and consistency — purpose-built trailers earn their keep on repeat lanes with the same cargo, and lose to a general-purpose flatbed on irregular or mixed freight.
