Ordering a full semi trailer, rather than picking a fixed catalog listing, means specifying five interlocking decisions: axle count and brand, suspension type, braking system, main beam material and the smaller running-gear items — kingpin, landing gear and tires — that get selected last but affect the trailer just as much. None of these are independent choices. Adding an axle changes suspension load rating; switching from mechanical to air suspension changes tare weight and therefore payload; and main beam material decides how much of that payload budget goes to steel before cargo even loads. Buyers ordering a flatbed trailer or a tanker trailer from a spec sheet get to make each of these calls individually, which is where most of the price and performance difference between two trailers of the same basic type actually comes from. Axle count is the first number that sets payload class, and it's a straight tradeoff between tare weight and rated capacity. A 2-axle flatbed suits 30-35 ton loads on shorter regional runs, while a 3-axle configuration pushes rated payload to 40-45 tons for long-haul work — the added axle adds tare weight and turning radius, so ordering more axles than a route actually needs just eats into usable payload for no benefit. Axle brand is a separate decision from count: SIGMA fits FUWA or BPW axles as standard, both established manufacturers with parts networks across most export markets, which matters more than brand name once a trailer is in service and needs a replacement hub or brake chamber years into its working life. Buyers running fleets in markets where a specific European axle brand is the local service standard sometimes request that brand by name at ordering time rather than accepting whichever supplier a factory defaults to — this is a legitimate spec request, and the right approach is to confirm axle brand and load rating on the quote before production starts, not to assume every trailer in a given payload class runs the same axle regardless of manufacturer.Suspension: Mechanical Leaf Spring vs Air Suspension
Mechanical leaf spring suspension is the standard, lower-cost choice across most of SIGMA's platform trailers, and it tolerates unpaved yard surfaces and rough haul roads better than air suspension while needing less specialized maintenance in markets without easy access to suspension parts — this is why tipper, side-tipper and log trailers default to leaf spring rather than air. Air suspension is standard rather than optional on trailers where ride quality protects the cargo or the trailer itself: curtain-side trailers run air suspension because the curtain and rail system wears out faster under repeated jolts than a solid-sided box would, tanker trailers running cement and dry bulk use it because batching-plant yards are paved and tank fatigue over years of daily loading is the bigger concern, and car carrier trailers use it to protect the vehicles riding on the upper deck. EBS — electronic braking, which layers real-time brake-force distribution across axles on top of the ABS anti-lock function — is available on trailers built for markets where it's required by regulation, such as ADR-compliant tanker builds or EU-bound platform trailers, and shows up alongside ABS as a dual-line ABS/EBS system on SIGMA's drawbar trailer line. The practical difference matters most on multi-axle heavy-haul equipment: ABS alone prevents wheel lock-up during hard braking, but EBS actively balances brake force between axles carrying uneven loads, which is more relevant on a 4-6 axle lowbed hauling asymmetric machinery than on a 2-axle flatbed running palletized freight. Buyers exporting into the EU or other markets with ADR or equivalent transport regulations should confirm ABS/EBS requirements against the destination market's rules before ordering, since retrofitting electronic braking after a trailer has shipped is far more expensive than specifying it on the original order.Main Beam Material: Q345B High-Strength Steel vs Aluminum Alloy
Q345B high-strength steel is the main beam material across SIGMA's entire trailer range — flatbeds, lowbeds, tankers and specialized haulers all frame on Q345B or, for heavier heavy-haul lowbed work, the higher-grade Q420B welded box girder. Aluminum alloy shows up in a different role: tank shells on the fuel tanker line use 5083 aluminum alloy as an alternative to carbon steel, and the car carrier trailer offers an aluminum deck panel option that cuts 800-1,200 kg of tare weight. The pattern holds across the range — aluminum earns its place where weight savings translate directly into extra payload or corrosion resistance on a component that doesn't carry concentrated structural load the way a main beam does, while the main beam itself stays steel because it needs to absorb bending and torsional stress under a fully loaded chassis that aluminum doesn't handle as predictably at a comparable thickness. A buyer asking about an aluminum semi trailer is usually really asking about an aluminum tank shell or deck panel rather than an aluminum main chassis, and it's worth confirming which component a quote actually applies aluminum to before comparing price against an all-steel build.Kingpin, Landing Gear, Tires and the Payload Math
The smaller running-gear items get specced last but carry real weight and cost implications. Kingpin size follows load class: a 2 inch (50mm) SAE kingpin is standard across flatbed, tanker and dry van builds, while heavy-haul lowbed and RGN trailers step up to a 3.5 inch (90mm) kingpin rated for the higher point loads a detachable or hydraulic gooseneck sees during coupling. Landing gear runs JOST or FUWA two-speed units as standard across the range, chosen mainly for parts availability. Tire configuration varies more by destination than by trailer type — 385/65R22.5 is the common highway tire across most export orders, while 11.00R20 shows up more often on trailers headed for rougher roads in Africa and Southeast Asia, where the taller sidewall handles unpaved surfaces and pothole impact better than a low-profile highway tire. Every one of these choices feeds the same final number: tare weight, subtracted from gross vehicle weight rating, is what determines actual usable payload, which is why a heavier build with more axles, air suspension and EBS isn't automatically the better order — it's the right order only when the route and cargo actually need what those choices add.
